DVDs with subtitles now clearly marked at Mr VIDEO
Hear2day and Mr VIDEO have partnered up in a project that has already made a significant difference to persons with hearing loss who enjoy watching DVDs, buit cannot always hear what is being said. Now you can easily distinguish the DVDs in Mr VIDEO stored that have subtitles by looking for the green sticker – those DVDs that have a stickers contain subtitles. Unfortunately not all DVDs are produced in South Africa have subtitles, a shortfall that hear2day is keenly following up with the manufacturers of DVDs in South Africa. We will keep you posted on the latest work on this issue. Please let us know if you have had any experience in using the system at Mr VIDEO stores. We would like to hear your views on the effectiveness of our project.
- Hermanus store with poster
- DVD with green labels

With the lauch of this project to the public via the Mr.Video outlets, it was intended that persons with hearing impairment would be more easily directed to the video shelves, where they could quickly identify DVDs with subtitling.
On doing a very brief survey of several outlets, it has been dissappointing to see that many stores still do not display the very effective green poster indicating the use of the small green stickers.
We would appreciate some feed back from DVD hirers as to whether our observations are indeed correct, so that we can approach Mr.Video to follow up on the outlets through out the country.
Come on hearing impaired folks, lets have your thoughts on this very important means of commuicating – if you cannot hear it, lets at least read it!!
I thought at one stage we were making progress with our ongoing campaigne with the Public Brodcaster to introduce subtitling on all of the locally produced ‘soapies’ including for instance the very popular Isidingo daily on TV3. For a month or so, I really enjoyed what was being said as the entire episode was subtitled in English. Great stuff for the SABC, somethings is really beginning to come right and the voice of the hearing impaired is being HEARD AND LISTENED TO!!
But ‘hey presto’ in flash, this last week, all signs of this progress disappeared off the TV screens. Just gone, no explanation, no nothing, except a big money splash on the SABC’s 75th birthday party. Keeps one thinking doen’t it!
Let the battle continue until one day, persons with sensory loss of hearing, finally triumph IN THEIR QUEST TO GET A CHOICE OF CHANNELS HAVING SUBTITLING OF THE SPOKEN WORD ON NATIONAL BROADCASTER TV!! PROGRAMS!!
Our Mr Video store does not use the Green stickers. Would really make it a quicker process when taking movies out, which goes something like this: Hubby “This is a great movie, let’s get it!” Me “awesome everyone is raving about it. Does it have subtitles?” Hubby reading the tiny print at the back “Darn, nope – let’s look a bit more for something else”. As for TV – most shows are pre-recorded so could definitely have subtitles. I watch eTV news in the evening because they run script at the bottom that at least gives me an idea of what the newsreader is saying.
